QAMAP: Quality Assurance Maturity and Process Assessment

QAMAP is an assessment methodology that evaluates an organisation’s quality assurance processes across 35 criteria, establishes the maturity level and delivers an improvement roadmap supported by measurable KPIs within five weeks.

Virgosol quality-assessment background

We measure your QA maturity across three dimensions

Each dimension is assessed through concrete questions, operational evidence and industry comparison.

  • Test Processes and OperationsProcess design, methodology, automation, test data management, coverage, and entry and exit criteria.
  • Organisational Structure and CultureTeam capability, governance, KPI and SLA management, standards compliance and SDLC integration.
  • Tools, Defects and ReportingTool selection, defect management, CI/CD integration, trend analysis and management reporting.

The 35 criteria

In five weeks we assess 35 criteria and present the score, the findings and the roadmap to your management team.

Process Design

We build the way of working that closes the gaps the assessment identified. The design is shaped by your release rhythm and your product structure.

Test levels and scope definitions

We define which test is carried out at which level and what each level is responsible for. Scope is set according to your product structure and release frequency.

Entry and exit criteria

We put in writing the conditions under which testing begins and the conditions under which it counts as complete. The release approval decision is tied to those criteria.

Defect lifecycle and prioritisation

We define the record, assignment, verification and closure steps for defects. Prioritisation rules are set through business impact and urgency criteria.

Test environment and data usage

We put environment allocation and conflict management under rule. We define how test data is generated, refreshed and protected.

Reporting structure and metric set

We determine which metric is reported, how often and to whom. The reporting structure is built on the tool set you already have.

What do you get at the end of the assessment?

The engagement closes with a table you can act on, not a status report.

Measurement & Findings

  • Maturity score, for each of the three dimensions and overall
  • A scored assessment of all 35 criteria, with the reasoning behind each finding
  • Gap analysis defining the distance between your current and target level
  • An impact and cost matrix comparing the priority gaps

Roadmap & Decision Outputs

  • An improvement roadmap with steps, owners, timelines and KPI definitions
  • A defined process set covering test levels, criteria, defect lifecycle and reporting
  • A management presentation reduced to decision level

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a quality maturity assessment?

It is the measurement of an organisation’s test processes, team structure and tool set against defined criteria. The aim is to score the current position and prioritise improvement steps. Virgosol’s QAMAP methodology takes that measurement across three dimensions and 35 criteria.

How long does QAMAP take, and how much of our team’s time does it use?

The engagement runs for five weeks. Your team’s contribution is limited to interviews, a few hours in total for each role. The analysis, scoring and reporting workload sits entirely with us. Your test processes do not stop while the work is under way.

What exactly is the output of the assessment?

A maturity score for the three dimensions, a reasoned scoring of all 35 criteria, an impact and cost matrix for the priority gaps, and an improvement roadmap supported by measurable KPIs. The roadmap sets out which step is taken when and with which resources.

What does being based on ISO/IEC 29119 and ISTQB mean?

It means the assessment criteria rest on internationally recognised standards rather than on individual opinion. Those two sources define software testing processes and testing competencies respectively. The result can therefore be debated internally and compared period on period.

We have no defined test process. Can we still be assessed?

Yes. A maturity assessment is even more valuable where process maturity is low, because it tells you where to begin. The assessment is carried out to find the shortest route to the target, not to pass judgment on the current process.

Do we have to buy Virgosol products after the assessment?

No. QAMAP is an independent service and its output is tool-agnostic. The roadmap includes steps that can be applied with the tool set you already have. A product is recommended only where the measurement requires it, and always with the reasoning attached.

How often should the assessment be repeated?

At the end of the period in which the roadmap is applied, typically after 12 months. A second measurement against the same criteria set shows progress numerically, which is what makes the quality investment reportable to management.
